Vietnam in Motion is a web-dossier that explores entangled stories of the people in contemporary Vietnam. Publishing scholarly articles, interviews, essays from artists, writers, and thinkers, it will look to range across disciplines and reflects on the transformation happening in the Socialist Republic Vietnam, a country of nearly 96 million people that still remains partly unobserved. By sharing the thoughts of experts in their fields of science, activism, the arts and beyond, it covers a wide range of important events that have crucial impact on the lives of the people. Vietnam in Motion thinks with and thinks about Vietnam, providing a space to reflect on politics, economy, future, nature, culture and the arts in the 21st century.

The Precarity at Sea: Lessons from Indonesian Migrant Fishers

Indonesia is one of the biggest sources of labor in the world, including fishers who are employed in Distant Water Fishing (DWF) under foreign-flagged vessels. Despite their significant contribution to the economy, it was only in 2017 that they were recognized as migrant workers. Thus, it is high-time for fishers’ unions, migrant communities, non-government organizations and civil societies to exert pressure on the Indonesian government and the international community to enforce the conventions and laws that ensure the protection of migrant fishermen's rights.

Current politics in Timor centers on personalities, history, and using ‘oil money’ as the solution to problems – it cannot cope with the rapidly changing the world and its domestic development challenges. Changing its way of doing politics and the way society is being governed is imperative to address structural issues in Timor’s development and maintain the relevancy and legitimacy of democratic institutions.
