Soil Atlas 2024
German version.
The ground beneath our feet is a true all-rounder. It is the most species-rich habitat on our planet, it stores gigantic amounts of greenhouse gases and water, feeds people and animals, allows flowers to bloom and trees to grow. Soil is a vital resource – and it is under threat. Around 60 percent of the soil in the EU is damaged, yesterday's fertile humus is drying out, turning into steppe and desert, and more and more soil is being sealed for the construction of infrastructure. Conflicts over increasingly scarce land are increasing. The Soil Atlas 2024 not only highlights the consequences of the global loss of fertile soil, but also shows the potential of sustainable and fair land use for climate protection and biodiversity.
