William (BJ) Schulte started working with EarthRights International in September 2019 as Mekong Region Policy and Campaigns Advisor.  Prior to joining EarthRights, BJ served as Assistant Director and Adjunct Faculty for the US-Asia Partnerships for Environmental Law at Vermont Law School, where his work and research focused on strengthening environmental rule of law and governance in China and the Mekong region. In this role, BJ worked with a variety of local partners including government departments, lawyers, and civil society organizations on initiatives ranging from training for capacity building to supporting the development of environmental laws, regulations and guidelines.

BJ also spent five years practicing public interest environmental law in Newark, New Jersey, where he represented environmental and community groups in litigation and administrative proceedings on matters related to environmental permit reviews, environmental justice, air pollution reduction, watershed protection, and energy infrastructure proposals, among others. BJ earned his JD from Rutgers University Law School – Newark, and earned an LLM in Environmental Law magna cum laude from Vermont Law School.
