Liza A. Ahngau is a smallholder coffee farmer and community based entrepreneur from Padawan, Sarawak, Malaysia. Rooted in Bidayuh traditions, her work centers on Liberica coffee, cultivated through forest based agroforestry systems that integrate biodiversity, soil care, and local ecological knowledge. She is involved in the entire coffee process from hand harvesting and traditional processing to roasting and serving, drawing on practices passed down through generations. Together with Lars Larsen her husband, she co manages a small jungle homestay where coffee is shared not only as a product, but as a reflection of culture, memory, and place.
Her work engages with broader questions of climate resilience, sustainable agriculture, and the role of indigenous knowledge in shaping future food systems. By highlighting the adaptive qualities of Liberica and the value of diversified farming systems, she contributes to ongoing conversations on alternative development pathways in Southeast Asia. Through her practice, Liza emphasizes the importance of reconnecting global coffee narratives with local realities, where farming is not only an economic activity but also a form of stewardship and intergenerational knowledge.
