Indonesiaʼs dilemma: The G20 and the United Nationsʼ Sustainable Development Goals within a national context

The G20 has been gaining ground as a platform for dialogue among the heads of state and government since the Washington summit held in response to the global financial crisis in November 2008. Since then, Presidents of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (2004–2014) and Joko Widodo (since October 2014) have attended the G20 summits regularly.

Indonesia will be able to play a leading role in the fight against climate change, and gets a global significance. To that end, a political leadership is needed which is able to promote consistency between the declared commitment shown in international forums and genuine implementation efforts.
